# Post season playoffs and tournaments

League Manager can run your post regular season playoffs and tournaments. If you played nine holes each event in League Manager, it is easiest to run 9-hole playoffs/tournaments. It is possible to run 18-hole playoffs or tournaments after a regular season of 9-hole events, but it is a bit more involved.

| **Scenarios** | **Regular Season Holes / Event** | **Post Season Holes / Event** | **League to use for post season** |
| ------------- | -------------------------------- | ----------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| 1 | 9 holes | 9 holes | Use existing regular season league |
| 2 | 9 holes | 9 holes | Create and use new 9-hole post season league |
| 3 | 9 holes | 18 holes | Create and use new 18-hole post season league |

## Scenario 1: 9-hole regular season; 9-hole post season; use regular season league

You can run your post season events using the same league used for the regular season by tacking on however many manual events you need for the post season.

### Schedule

At the beginning of the season when you set your schedule, you can add enough events/weeks to handle your playoff(s) or tournament(s). For example, if your regular season is 20 weeks long and you have 3 weeks of playoffs, you could set up your schedule for 23 events/weeks. At the end of the season, if you realize you need to [add some events](https://golfsoftware.gitbook.io/docs/league-manager/readme/scheduling/how-to-change-the-number-of-events) for playoffs, do so. You will insert three "M?" - [manual](https://golfsoftware.gitbook.io/docs/league-manager/readme/scheduling/how-to-manually-schedule-a-position-night-fun-night-etc) - events for the last three "A##" - Automatic - events (see Figure 1).

### Pairings

Your playoff may start with all of your league players/teams or just those who qualified. You will need to manually pair the players/teams who will be playing in the playoffs. Please see how to manually pair in the article, [How to Manually Schedule a Position Night, Fun Night, etc.](https://golfsoftware.gitbook.io/docs/league-manager/readme/scheduling/how-to-manually-schedule-a-position-night-fun-night-etc), or the User Guide page, [Manually Insert Event or Build Schedule](https://www.golfsoftware.com/help/lmw/ManuallyInsertEventOrBuildSchedule.html?key=pair).

You will first manually pair the players/teams that made the playoffs. Then, you will need to randomly pair all others. League Manager requires that all are paired before saving.

### Results

You can use one of the existing results reports to come up with your results, create a new results report or figure it outside of League Manager.

## Scenario 2: 9-hole regular season; 9-hole post season; create new playoff league

You can create a new league to run your post season. In this scenario, [create a new league](https://www.golfsoftware.com/help/lmw/CreateLeague.html?key=create) as a "Filled" league (this brings in all your players and scores, handicaps, settings from your regular season).

### Players

If only your players who made the playoffs are playing, then you can delete or move everyone else to the substitute list from the Pre-play Manage screen. If players that did not qualify for the playoffs are also playing "just for fun," then you can leave them in.

### Schedule

The schedule for your newly created playoff league in League Manager is simple. Just create enough manual events to take care of your post season playoffs. If you have three events/weeks in post season, change the number of events in the schedule to just three. You will insert three "M?" - [manual](https://golfsoftware.gitbook.io/docs/league-manager/readme/scheduling/how-to-manually-schedule-a-position-night-fun-night-etc) - events to handle your playoffs (see Figure 2).

### Pairings

Your playoff may start with all of your league players/teams or just those who qualified. You will need to manually pair the players or teams who will be playing in the playoffs.

If you included players/teams that did not make the playoffs, then you will need to randomly pair all of these non-playoff players/teams as well. League Manager requires that all players/teams are paired before saving.

You can use one of the existing results reports to come up with your results, create a new results report or figure it outside of League Manager.

## Scenario 3: 9-hole regular season; 18-hole post season; create new playoff league

If your group's regular season consisted of nine hole rounds each event, but your playoff will be 18-hole round(s), you will need to...

1. Create a new 18-hole league for your playoffs
2. Export players from your regular season
3. Import players into your 18-hole playoff league
4. Calculate players' 18-hole handicap from your regular season data
5. Create your playoff schedule
6. Manually pair playoff events
7. Produce your results

### A. Create new 18-hole league for playoffs

Create a new 18-hole league to run your post season. In this scenario, [create a new league](https://www.golfsoftware.com/help/lmw/CreateLeague.html?key=create) as a "Blank" league.

### B. Export players from regular season league

Follow the directions at [Export Players](https://www.golfsoftware.com/help/lmw/ExportPlayers.html?key=export) to put your players into a CSV file that you can import into your new 18-hole league. Note that passwords are not exported.

### C. Import players into new 18-hole league

Follow directions at [Import Players](https://www.golfsoftware.com/help/lmw/ImportPlayers.html?key=import) to bring your regular season players into your 18-hole playoff league. Note that upon importing, new passwords are assigned to each player.

### D. Calculate each player's 18-hole handicap

You will need to calculate each player's 18-hole handicap from the tee they will play. You will need...

* the number highlighted in green in Figure 3 below from the last event of your regular season
* rating for the tee(s) that will be used in the playoffs
* slope for the tee(s) that will be used in the playoffs

Figure 3

![](https://3605863132-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FnEW9hdp8q3Fxhnl089ay%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-cfc0feec90c8a7e7a75624f95077e2c13ad14724%2Fleague-manager-scheduling-post-season-playoffs-and-tournaments-03.png?alt=media)

In the example for Luther in Figure 3 above, we would...

1. Go to last event of the regular season
2. Go to Pre-play Manage screen
3. Find Luther's name and click on it
4. Click on the tab labeled, "Handicap #(number of last event)"
5. Click on the button labeled, "How is handicap calculated?"
6. Scroll down to Item 3 at the bottom
7. Find the number highlighted in green (Handicap) in Figure 3 above - 11.29 for Luther
8. Multiply 11.29 by 2 to derive 22.58.

Do this for all of your playoff players.

If everybody is playing from the same set of tees, then use the following formula to calculate the handicap each player will use in the playoffs:

*Handicap* = (# derived in eight steps above) x (slope for set of tees/113)

If players will play from multiple sets of tees in the playoffs, then use the above *Handicap* to calculate the Final Handicap for each player.

*Final Handicap* = *Handicap* + (`gsRating` for set of tees played - `par` for set of tees played)

In the 18-hole league for playoffs, go to Pre-play Manage screen, click on a player's name, click on Handicap #1 tab and type in the *Final Handicap* for that player.

### E. Schedule

The schedule for your newly created playoff league in League Manager is simple. Just create enough manual events to take care of your post season playoffs. If you have three events/weeks in post season, change the number of events in the schedule to just three. You will insert three "M?" - [manual ](https://golfsoftware.gitbook.io/docs/league-manager/readme/scheduling/how-to-manually-schedule-a-position-night-fun-night-etc)- events to handle your playoffs (see Figure 2).

### F. Pairings

Your playoff may start with all of your league players/teams or just those who qualified. You will need to manually pair the players or teams who will be playing in the playoffs.

If you included players/teams that did not make the playoffs, then you will need to randomly pair all of these non-playoff players/teams as well. League Manager requires that all players/teams are paired before saving.

### G. Results

You can create a new results report or figure out playoff results outside of League Manager.
